A native Texan, born in Lockhart, Al graduated from Texas State University and teaches high school social studies and coaches girls’ soccer at San Marcos High School. He has two grown children and three grandchildren. Al’s parents were ranchers, running a large ranch in central Texas, and they loved to dance. So, he learned to dance at an early age and still enjoys two steps, jitterbugs, and waltzes and a little Latin. He is a gardener and can grow most anything, with rose, herb, butterfly and tomato gardens. He loves to travel, camp out, sipping wine, and cooking. Musically, Al came from a family of musicians. His grandfather played cornet in an Austin orchestra in the early 1900’s. Al took guitar lessons as a child from Wayne Wood, who had a big influence from that point on in Al’s musical life. In high school there was a sixty’s style rock band called the “One Way Streets” with Al playing lead guitar. For a young high school group, this band played often at teen clubs and college frat parties. In his early twenty’s Willie Nelson moved to Austin and all of the hippies around Austin started getting into country music at the Armadillo. So, Al took steel guitar lessons from Wayne Wood and formed “Al Dressen and the Sunset Riders”, playing at the many country dancehalls in the central Texas area.
